Concorde Exhibition, Museum of Flight, East Fortune

Concorde Exhibition, Museum of Flight, East Fortune

Client: National Museums Scotland
Architect: Smith Scott Mullan
Cost: £0.5m

The project comprised alterations to the existing Hangar 4 building in order to house Concorde itself and the exhibition.  This involved structural strengthening and adjustments to the lattice portal frames to achieve more height in the location of Concorde’s tail.  The works were carried out in a manner that would allow the restoration of the frames back to their original profile should Concorde be relocated again in the future.  This was achieved by carefully setting aside and retaining the original structure and designing appropriate bolted connections between the new and retained existing members.

Further alterations were made to the existing two storey timber framed office blocks which are located within the northwest corner of Hangar 4.  This was to provide more suitable office space and enhance the educational facility for the Concorde exhibition.  The layout of the corner block at ground floor level was altered by the introduction of new structural openings, and the stair link and corridor were relocated to suit the new layout by dismantling and re-building the existing steel structure.
