Edinburgh Futures Institute at Quartermile

Client: University of Edinburgh
Architect: Bennetts Associates
Cost: £80.0m

We have been involved in the redevelopment of the category A Listed former Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for many years, over different phases.

This latest and final phase of the redevelopment involves the main front areas of the former hospital, and clock tower, and turning them into a new teaching facility for the University of Edinburgh.

The project, which is now nearing completion commenced in 2017 with early asbestos removal and services strip out. This was followed by an enabling works package to demolish some of the non-original/extensions and to undertake site investigations etc. The main construction works commenced in spring of 2019 and due to complete in May 2024.

The project comprised refurbishment of the original surgical wings and spine corridor with new extensions to the north east and west sides (front) to form additional teaching space. A further extension along the length of the building on the south side (rear) opens up the existing corridor to enhance circulation space and create a vibrant social area to encourage informal discussions and meets.

A final double height subterranean extension has been formed beneath the main entrance plaza which will offer a state-of-the-art event space and encourage use from the wider community.
