Portavadie Pier, Loch Fyne, Argyll

Portavadie Pier, Loch Fyne, Argyll

Client: Iggesund Paperboard Ltd
Cost: £0.7m

Following investigation of the original sheet piled sea wall to Portavadie Marina, and observed widespread marine corrosion to the steelwork, Will Rudd Davidson designed proposals for remedial measures, and administered the Contract for the works.

This included option review, intrusive investigation to establish the extent and severity of the corrosion, and an appraisal on the projected lifespan of the pier, which led to the conclusion that remedial works were required to secure the ongoing serviceability of the pier wall.

The works comprised removal of products of corrosion, welding of new steel plates, across the pile clutches, where loss of cross section was substantial, particularly in the splash zone,

We liaised with Specialist Contractors, specifying means of underwater welding, application of painted protection and void grouting, along with providing input to sequencing and methodology to account for the tidal conditions.

Works were carried out in accordance with the Coastal Protection Act 1949. We also coordinated works with the Scottish Executive, Crown Estates, nearby shipping business and tidal calendars.
